VP Sathyan a former India captain and dogged defender started his career in 1983 under the tutelage of famous footballer TA Rehman in Lucky Star club of Kannur, Kerala. Sathyan had special mentions of TA Rehman Sir and his father C. Gopalan for him being a successful footballer.

He joined Kerala Police in 1984 and played till 91. Kerala Police was a formidable team and won Federation cup twice on the trot in 1990 and 1991 beating 3 big clubs of Kolkata. He had a tremendous success in Santosh trophy as well for Kerala and played 5 consecutive finals and won the championship in 1992.He might not have hogged the limelight during his playing days but his assuring presence at the defence helped his State ,Club teams and National team to get innumerable success. He donned the National colours for 40 matches until his retirement in 1997.

He switched his allegiance to Mohun Bagan in 1993 and tasted success immediately. Mariners won their lucky Federation Cup twice on the row in 1993.VP Sathyan scored the all important goal in the final when Mohun Bagan beaten Mahindra & Mahindra by 1-0 margin in Kozhikode. He was integral part of the squad which won Shibdas Bhaduri trophy and Scissors cup. He moved back to Kerala Police again in the very next season.

VP Sathyan who had a long illustrious career and captained Indian National team for long time did not get the deserved recognition. He is still remembered for his stunning long ranger goal in Merdeka cup in 1986 against South Korea. He passed away at the age of 41 in  a mysterious circumstances in 2006.Nonetheless he will always be remembered as a leader with awe inspiring body language and determination.
