Fatorda, Feb 22, 2020: Baba Diawara (6′), Suhair (50′) and Komron Tursunov (58′) scored to help Mohun Bagan get a 3-0 win over Churchill Brothers at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda, Goa, on Saturday. The Mariners are now 11 points clear at the top of I-League 2019-20 table.

With Dhanachandra Singh suspended for card issues, Kibu Vicuna started with Daneil Cyrus and Gurjinder Kumar in the first eleven while Tursunov moved out of first eleven.

Just after 6 minutes of play, Bagan drew the first blood when Baba scored from a Fran Gonzalez assist from a Beitia Free Kick. Churchill tried rest of the first half to make a comeback in the match by scoring an equalizer. Their plan was never successful with the brilliant defense and midfield organization of Bagan. Namely, Sk. Sahil, Gonzalez and Morante were instrumental in foiling their attacks.

After the lemon break, Kibu made an important change and introduced Tursunov in place of Cyrus. Bagan sealed the fate of the match in the second half with two consecutive goals. In the 50th minute, a brilliant right-footed long ranger of VP Suhair from the top of the penalty box doubled the lead for Bagan. In the 58th minute the super sub Tursunov extended the lead with a tap in from a Gurjinder’s cross after a brilliant 23 touches build up play by Bagan players. Bagan players tried to extend the margin more until the end but couple of brilliant saves by Churchill goalkeeper and the woodwork made sure the score line remained 3-0 in favor of the Kolkata Side.

After the match, Vicuna said, “In the second half, we played fantastic. We scored two goals and created many chances to score more. We controlled the game completely. We had the ball; we played from one side to the other. We enjoyed the game.” Also about the brilliant, eleven match unbeaten streak of the mariners he added, “The objective is to win the trophy at the end of the season. These records of 11 matches unbeaten are just statistics and to be honest, we are not thinking about these things.
