Mohun Bagan Athletic Club
The Beginning of the Journey: 1889-1903
The first “Home Ground” of the Club on the spacious ground of Mohun Bagan Villa
Kirti Mitter, the father of Priyanath Mitter owned a famous marble palace named ‘Mohun Bagan Villa’ near Shyambazar area. The Villa and adjacent grounds were surrounded by Fariapukur Street on the north, Upper Circular Road on the east, Kirti Mitter Lane on the west and Mohun Bagan lane in the south. During that time the students of ‘Dukhiram Majumder Students’ Union’ used to play in the medium sized ground in front of the Villa. After a short spell at Villa Mr. Majumder shifted his base to Laha’s ground and changed the name of the union to ‘Aryans’. Some players from Mohun Bagan Villa went to Shyam Square where ‘Bagbazar Club’ was formed under the leadership of Young brigade from the Sen family of Bagbazar. However the players who still continued to play in the Mohun Bagan Villa ground could not compete with the rest of the clubs as they didn’t have a club of their own anymore. To provide support to these players, three famous families of Kolkata- Basu family, Mitra family and Sen family came forward.
On the eve of 15th of August 1889 a meeting was held in the house of the then famous lawyer, Mr. Bhupendra Nath Basu (who later became the President of the Indian National Congress) at 14, Balaram Ghosh Street. In the meeting, the unanimous decision to form ‘Mohun Bagan Sporting Club’ with the existing players playing in the Mohun Bagan Villa was taken.
The first President and Secretary of Mohun Bagan club were Mr. Bhupendra Nath Bose and Mr. Jyotindra Nath Bose respectively. Mr. Monilal Sen was the first captain of the club. He was the first Indian cricketer in Bengal to have taken the round arm bowling. Some of the famous people who were present on that very auspicious moment were—
Bhupendra Nath Bose, Jyotindra Nath Bose, Monilal Sen, Jyotindra Nath Mitra, Roy Bahadur Chunilal Bose, Sir Nripendra Nath Sarkar, Maharaja Durga Charan Laha (Maharaja of Shyam Pukur), Dr. Manindra Nath Bose, Sir Brajendralal Mitra, Major S.K Ghosh, Maharaja Rajendra Bhup Bahadur (Maharaja of Coochbehar), Sir Bhupendra Nath Mitra, Dr.Ganendra Nath Mitra, Sir Rajendra Nath Mukhopadhyay, C. C. Dutta, Pramatha Nath Chattopadhyay, Ram Goswami, Sir Prabhash Mitra, Prafulla Bose, Nalin Chandra Bose, Hemnath Sen, Girin Bose, Upen Ghosh, Monmohan Pande, C. K. Sarkar, Sir Brojendralal Mitter, Satish Chandra Mitra, Sushil Chandra Mitra, Sarat Chandra Mitter.
The Mohun Bagan Club got its first playground inside the Mohun Bagan Villa (1889-1892). The intent of being part of the club gathered a lot of momentum under the able guidance of eminent personalities like Mr. Bhupendra Nath Bose and Mr. Jatindra Nath Bose. At the inception except for a limited few on the top it was the convention to accept only students as members. But being a member of the Club wasn’t easy as the club officials were not only careful about the quality of play but also the etiquette and education of the members.
One of the first football matches the club played on the Mohun Bagan Villa grounds was against the students of ‘Hindu Hostel’. That year, among others, the following played for the club —
Girin Bose, Pramatha Chatterjee, Sachin Banerjee, Ram Goswami, Sarat Mitter, Hem Nath Sen, Nalin Bose, Upen Ghosh, Manindra Nath Bose, Manomoham Pande, Provas Mitter, Manilal Sen.
At the first anniversary of the club, on the invitation of some of the student-members who were in the Presidency College, Prof. F. J. Rowe presided over the meeting. He suggested the name of the club as ‘Mohun Bagan Athletic Club’. The suggestion was accepted with immediate effect.
By 1892, the club ground relocated to Laha’s field— the second playground of Mohun Bagan (1892–1894). During that period, the main opponent teams of Mohun Bagan were National AC, Town Club, Aryans, Calcutta Medical College, Shibpur Engineering College, Fort Wiiliams, Kumartuli and Sovabazar Club.
Next year Mohun Bagan invited the European team Sussex Regiment “C” Company for a friendly football match. The main objective was to learn some good techniques from the foreign team. Although Mohun Bagan lost the match, the aim was fulfilled.
Mohun Bagan played their first tournament in the year 1893 in Coochbehar Cup. But they did not perform well. The morale of the team was very low but the club officials came forward and backed up the players.
After that, Mohun Bagan started playing in different tournaments like Coochbehar Cup, Trades Cup, etc. but was unable to get the all-important victory. After the opening by the Calcutta Corporation of the public square known as Shyam Square, the club was alloted space there along with Aryans and Baghbazar Club. Thus Shyam Square was the third playground of Mohun Bagan (1895–1900). Some administrative changes took place that time. In 1895, Jyotindra Nath Mitra became the Honorary Secretary and Jyotindra Nath Basu became the Vice-President. Sir Bhupendra Nath Mitra took over the role of secretary from Jyotindra Nath Mitra in 1898 and continued until 1900.
In 1900, Mohun Bagan club officials again felt the pressing need to change to the bigger ground and decided to move to Kolkata Maidan area. The first home of the club on the maidan was on the site of Presidency College ground which the club shared with the college till 1915. Major Sailendra Nath Bose took the responsibility of secretary post of the club from 1900 up to 1914. Mr. Bose was very strict about the rules and regulations of the club. The players who were part of the team during that time were —Prabodh Das (Goalkeeper), Dr. Girish Ghosh (Back), Annada Das (Back), Prafulla Roy (Half Back), Donga Dutta (Half Back), Khitish Singha (Half Back), Bhola Ghosh (Half Back), Anath Das (Half Back), Ramdas Bhaduri (Forward), Dwijadas Bhaduri (Forward), Bijoydas Bhaduri (Forward), Shibdas Bhaduri (Forward), Dwijendra Nath Basu (Forward)
First Step Towards Success: 1904–1910
Trades Cup Champion Team -1908
Organizational and team-building ability of Major Sailendra Nath Bose finally brought in much desired success. In the year 1904, Mohun Bagan won its first trophy — Cooch Behar Cup. But in the same year Mr. Durgacharan Laha, one of the patrons of Mohun Bagan club passed away. The club officials requested Maharaja of Cooch Behar, Raja Rajendra Bhup Bahadur to fill the void.
In 1905, Mohun Bagan won the Cooch Behar Cup consecutively for second time in 1905 defeating Mohamedan Sporting. In the same year Mohun Bagan reached the final of Gladstone Cup, held in Chinsurah. The opponent in the final was Dalhousie. That year Dalhousie won the IFA shield defeating Calcutta F.C. But Mohun Bagan played brilliantly throughout the match and knocked out Dalhousie by 5-0.
In 1906, Mohun Bagan got more success. This year club grabbed Trades Cup, Gladstone Cup and Coochbehar Cup. These achievements made Mohun Bagan the most prestigious Indian club. In the same year Mohun Bagan participated in the Minto Fete Tournament. This tournament was mainly for the British and Army football teams organized by Lady Minto, wife of then Viceroy of India. Among the Indian clubs only Mohun Bagan got the invitation to participate in this tournament.
In 1907 Mohun Bagan again won Trades Cup that was the third most prestigious tournament after IFA Shield and Coochbehar Cup during that time.
In 1908 Mohun Bagan created a new record by winning the Trades Cup for consecutive three times. The team also won Gladstone Cup in this year.
In 1909, Mohun Bagan got the first chance to participate in IFA Shield. During that time, participation in IFA Shield was an honour because only few teams were permitted to participate in this prestigious tournament. The other four lucky teams were Chinsurah Sporting, Shovabazar, Town Club and Hare Sporting. In the first round, Mohun Bagan defeated YMCA by 1-0 but lost to Gordon Highlanders’ by 3-0 on a slushy outfield and got eliminated from the Shield. But Mohun Bagan took the sweet revenge by defeating Gordon Highlanders’ in the final of Lakshmibilas Cup by a solitary goal of Mr. Shibdas Bhaduri. The final match was consecutively played for 6 days to get the all-important result. Some of the disappointed and enraged Highlanders snatched the Cup away from the victors, though only for a while!!!
In 1910, Mohun Bagan again was unable to show its excellence in the IFA Shield. Although this year Mohun Bagan won Lakshmibilas Cup and Nawab Asanullah Challenge Shield and Bengal Jimkhana Shield, captain Mr. Shibdas Bhaduri was really upset on getting knocked out of first round of IFA Shield. During this time, Mr. Sailendra Nath Bose stood by Mr. Bhaduri and handed over all the responsibilities of football team to the latter. Mr. Bhaduri then arranged the team in a new format and Mohun Bagan footballers then started to prepare themselves for the next year IFA Shield.
Creation Of History – 1911 IFA Shield Champion
Historic 1911 IFA Shield Winning Squad
“All honour to Mohun Bagan!! Those eleven players are not only a glory to themselves and to their Club and to the great nation to which they belong; they are the glory to the game itself”— this was the report that was published in The Empire (An evening daily in Calcutta) regarding the historic 1911 IFA Shield win of Mohun Bagan. Mohun Bagan became the first club of India to win the IFA Shield in 1911 by defeating East Yorkshire Regiment. Mohun Bagan supporters, still feel proud when they discuss or even think about this great victory, which not only acted as a stimulus for the increase of popularity of football in Bengal but also acted as a catalyst for the freedom movement against the British supremacy. The founder Secretary Jatindra Nath Basu commented on the 1911 success: “That win was not accidental but had to be worked inch by inch through contests with some of the strongest teams in India”. Mohun Bagan defeated the following clubs to reach the final:
First Round – Mohun Bagan (Bijaydas Bhaduri 2, Abhilas Ghosh) 3 – 0 St. Xaviers.
Second Round – Mohun Bagan(Shibdas Bhaduri, Bijaydas Bhaduri) 2 – 1 Rangers(Allen)
Third Round – Mohun Bagan(Bijaydas Bhaduri) 1 – 0 Rifle Brigade
Semifinal – Mohun Bagan (Kanu Roy) 1 – 1st Middlesex(Clarke)
Semifinal (Replay) – Mohun Bagan(Shibdas Bhaduri, Habul Sarkar, Kanu roy) 3 – 0 1st Middlesex
In the final on 29th July, in front of a huge crowd presence Mohun Bagan faced the stiff challenge of East Yorks Regiment. East Yorks drew the first blood in the second half when their captain Jackson scored from a free kick. Mohun Bagan had their opportunities and Shibdas Bhaduri levelled the score within five minutes. Three minutes later he again broke the resistance of the military team and entered their box. This time Abhilas Ghosh scored the all-important goal receiving a pass from the captain Shibdas Bhaduri.
The Mohun Bagan team for 1911 IFA Shield was—
Hiralal Mukherjee (Goal), Bhuti Sukul and Sudhir Chatterjee (backs), Monmohan Mukherjee, Rajendra Nath Sengupta, Nilmadhab Bhattacharjee (halves), Jitendra Nath Roy (Kanu), Sris Chanda Sarkar (Habul) , Abhilas Ghosh, Bijaydas Bhaduri, Shibdas Bhaduri(Captain)(Forwards).
In 1911 Mohun Bagan also won Gladstone Cup, Nawab Asanullah Challenge Shield and Bengal Jimkhana Shield.
From 1912 to 1919 – (Silver Jubilee in 1914)
Gostha Paul – The Chinese Wall
The British people did not take this defeat of East Yorkshire Regiment in right spirit. They were very angry on Mohun Bagan and tried to keep Mohun Bagan under pressure.
The dark side of this conspiracy came in 1912 IFA Shield. In the first round, Mohun Bagan faced the then famous team Calcutta F.C. This match was of particular interest because that was the first match in India of which motion pictures had been taken by the famous pioneers of the film industry in India, Messrs. J. F. Madan and Co. It was pre-planned to eliminate Mohun Bagan just from the first round of IFA Shield. In the match, Mohun Bagan scored three goals, but the referee annulled two goals for offside. Mohun Bagan finally lost the match by 1-2. Mohun Bagan captain Mr. Shibdas Bhaduri did not protest in the field but he was very upset regarding this incident and took retirement from his football career. Sudhir Chatterjee was injured and he also took retirement.
This year Mohun Bagan won Nawab Asanulla Challenge Shield. It was the third consecutive victory of Mohun Bagan. Club also grabbed the Bengal Jimkhana shield this year.
Habul Sarkar became the captain of Mohun Bagan in 1913. In 1913 Mohun Bagan did not win any trophy. The club lost to E. B. R in the IFA shield. But this year was memorable for another reason. This year Mohun Bagan got an excellent talented footballer, Gostho Paul, popularly known as “Chinese Wall”. He filled up the void created by retirement of Sudhir Chatterjee. Gostho Pal played his first game for Mohun Bagan at the age of only 16 years in a friendly match in a sloppy ground against Dalhousie. But he did not perform well and experts made the negative comments about him. After two days, there was the match against Black Watch, the league winner at that time. Gostho Paul came to ground with a bit hesitation. But he was amazed when Bhuti Sukul asked him whether he would play with him in the first eleven. In this match, Gostho Paul played brilliantly. From that day onwards, for continuous 23 years he played for Mohun Bagan as successful back. He was also the captain of Mohun Bagan from 1921 to 1927.
In the year 1914, Mohun Bagan got its first chance to participate in the second division of Calcutta League along with Aryans—the previous year Trades Cup winning team. In first year league, Mohun Bagan scored 27 goals in 16 matches . “B” team of 93 Highlanders’ was the champion of the league but they could not be promoted to first division as their first team was already in that division. Mohun Bagan and Measurers shared the same points(22) in the league table. So to decide which team will move to first division, a playoff match was organized between Mohun Bagan and Measurers. First day result was draw but on the second day Mohun Bagan lost the match by 1-2 and Measurers moved to the first division. The CFL committee, however, felt that Mohun Bagan should also be promoted. And this was done as a vacancy in the first division had occurred owing to the withdrawal of the RGA. This year Mr. Dwijendra Nath Bose was selected as the secretary of the club as Major Sailendra Nath Bose had to leave Calcutta for his commitments in the Military Service for the First World War. Mohun Bagan played a charity match against Calcutta FC in the aid of War Relief Fund. This year Mohun Bagan celebrated the Silver Jubilee Year.
In 1915, Mohun Bagan played their first match in first division of Calcutta League on 15th May, 1915 against Calcutta Club. The match resulted in a draw. Just like 1913–14 seasons, Mohun Bagan did not get any trophy during this year also but took fourth position in the Calcutta League and reached the semi-final of the IFA Shield. The junior teams of the club went up to the Semi-Final games in the Trades Cup and Coochbehar Cup. This year Mohun Bagan got the ground of National A.C. The Club shared this ground from 1915 to 1963.
In 1916, Mohun Bagan finished the Calcutta League in second position just behind Calcutta FC and won Cooch Behar Cup and Chandannagar Cup.
In 1917, Mohun Bagan lost to Middlesex team in the IFA shield.
In 1918 and 1919 Mohun Bagan finished third and fourth respectively in Calcutta Football League.

In 1924, Mohun Bagan lost one of its big well-wishers, the first club President Mr. Bhupendra Nath Bose. After this incident, Sir Rajendra Nath Mukherjee became the new President of Mohun Bagan club. Dwijendra Nath Basu and D. N. Guin were selected as the Honorary Joint Secretary of the club.
In 1925, Mohun Bagan created another history by getting invitation as the first ever-Indian football club for playing in the Durand Cup. In those days only British military teams had the sole right to participate in the Durand Cup. Mohun Bagan reached the semi-final by defeating Royal Berkshire regiment in the first round, the York Lancaster Regiment in the second round and the Essex Regiment in the third round but lost to Sherwood Forest at the Semi-final after a good fight. In the same year club took second position in the Calcutta League just one point behind Calcutta FC. Dwijendra Nath Bose was elected the Honorary General Secretary of the club in this year.

In this year Club won the Governor’s Cup of Hazaribagh but was unable to make any impact in the Durand Cup, which was, held at Shimla, even in presence of some great players like Samad, Balaidas Chatterjee. Mohun Bagan lost to the Wiltshire Regiment in the IFA Shield competition by 2-1.
In 1928, Mohun Bagan won the Power League for the first time, Cooch Behar Cup for the fourth time and Lakshmibilas Cup for the third time. The club finished third in the Calcutta Football League, winning all the matches in the first half except that with the Dalhousie AC, who became the champions. In the IFA Shield competition Mohun Bagan lost to the same club.
In 1929, there was some unpleasantness at the League Game between the Dalhousie Club and Mohun Bagan, resulting in the withdrawal of nearly all the Indian Clubs from the IFA and the Calcutta League. But there was a happy ending to the dispute. There was an amicable settlement agreed to by all the clubs, under which the Indian Clubs earned equal representation with the European Clubs on the Council of the IFA. The Indian Clubs revert their decision of withdrawal and played in the IFA Shield and League subsequently. Mohun Bagan finished second in the League competition, Dalhousie being the champions. The club lost to Royal Irish Fusiliers , one of the strongest sides then in India by 1-0 in the fourth round of IFA Shield . Mohun Bagan took part in Durand Cup contest but lost to the Sandemanians.
1930 to 1939 – First-Ever Calcutta League Championship
First Ever Calcutta League Champion Team
In 1930, there was strong political agitation throughout the country and there was a serious apprehensions of riots and of disturbances of the public tranquility. As uncertainty looms large Mohun Bagan and other Indian League Clubs met and decided not to play matches that season.
In 1931, IFA Shield tournament the club lost to the Highlanders by 3-0 after one drawn game. The club had the misfortune to lose one of its gems, Major Sailendra Nath Bose, who had been Honorary Secretary during so many eventful years, and to whom the club owes a deep debt of gratitude. To do honour to his memory, the club presented a Shield, bearing his name, to the IFA for awarding it to the winners of annual match between the Indian and European clubs.

In his memory the club gave a cup to the IFA to be presented every year to the captain of the winning team in the IFA Shield tournament. On 24th June of same year, Mohun Bagan lost Dwijendra Nath Bose who had taken up the role of secretary in 1916 and continued till the time of his death, except for one year in 1924— when he was Joint Honorary Secretary with D.
