Named after Sir Mortimer Durand, Durand Cup is India’s oldest football tournament. British army team Royal Scots Fusiliers won the first edition of Durand Cup in 1888. Till 1940 Durand Cup was held in Shimla – Mohammedan SC became the first Indian club to lift Durand Cup in 1940. Initially the tournament admitted only British regiment teams but the authorities decided to include Indian civilian teams from 1925 in order to increase its popularity. Mohun Bagan became the first Indian team to participate in Durand Cup
I come from a hardcore Mohun Bagan family. My father and uncles (none of whom are any more) and brothers were a set of die-hard supporters of the club to the extent that there would be no dinner if we lost to East Bengal. I still remember the day of the famous Shyam Thapa bicycle volley in 1978. I was eight years old, and was watching a rickety TV in my grandmother’s house.
The dreams of millions were fulfilled .. I saw kids dancing in rain, I saw elders weeping like toddlers, I saw Holi being played with two colours, I saw people shrieking with joy, I saw people clinging on the flags and crests and dancing like this was their last celebration, I saw club officials dancing with us, I saw players coming and saluting the spirit of fans, I saw Mohun Bagan my mother club lifting the I League 2015, I saw 125 year old boat, raising its head once again over the turbulent waters, fluttering it’d green and maroon sail and vociferously telling its billion sailors, the sail has been hoisted again, let us ride over all the waves and row together towards a new dawn.
Mariners From Bangalore : Thirteen long years without that coveted trophy, previous five years without any trophy, Mohun Bagan was standing on the brink of history. The mariners needed just one solitary point to be crowned as I League Champion of 2015.
Dr. Anjan Kumar Das : Why does one become a fan of a particular club and not another? When I was a kid, I was most influenced by my maternal uncles. My two youngest uncles, who influenced me the most were fanatical East Bengal supporters. It would have been natural for me to support that team. However I was ever since I can remember a Mohun Bagan fan
