Mohammad Abdus Sattar (1925 – 23 April 2011) was also known as Madar Abdus Sattar.

Mohammad Abdus Sattar was a vital player for Mohun Bagan in 1950s. He started his career with Bangalore Muslims Club and won Rovers Cup in 1948 with them. He then joined Mohammedan Sporting Club and in 1949 Mohun Bagan took Sattar on loan for Rovers Cup. He signed for Mohun Bagan in 1950 and played for the club from 1950 to 1958.

Sattar played as an inside forward. He could dribble with both feet and was an excellent schemer. He also forged a great combination with Samar Banerjee and Keshto Paul – the trio helped Mohun Bagan to win a number of trophies in 1950s.

In 1953 Mohun Bagan won Durand Cup for the first time after defeating National Defence Academy 4-0 in final. Captain Sailen Manna was injured in semi-final so Sattar was stand-in captain during the final. Sattar showed great sportsmanship by offering chance to Sailen Manna to receive the trophy. However, Sailen Manna also wanted Sattar to do the honours. In the end both Sattar and Sailen Manna received the trophy from President Dr. Rajendra Prasad.

Mohun Bagan won Calcutta League in 1955 but performed poorly in other tournaments. Sailen Manna and a number of other players were out injured so the club decided to not participate in Rovers Cup. Sattar convinced club secretary SM Basu to reconsider his decision and Mohun Bagan eventually travelled to Bombay for the tournament. Mohun Bagan faced a tough challenge from Caltex FC in semi-final. First three matches ended in 0-0 draws but Mohun Bagan was able to win the third replayed match. In final Mohun Bagan defeated Mohammedan SC 2-0 to win their first ever Rovers Cup title. Sattar was yet again stand-in captain.

Under Sattar’s captaincy Mohun Bagan won Calcutta League-IFA Shield double in 1956.

MA Sattar was part of preparatory camp for Indian squad of 1948 Olympics. Unfortunately, he missed out due to a misunderstanding regarding use of boots. Sattar left the camp under the impression that wearing boots was mandatory, only to later know that barefeet players were allowed. He was a regular for the national team between 1951 and 1955, participating in 1951 Asian Games as well as 1952 Olympics. He also played in all four Quadrangular tournaments which also involved Pakistan, Srilanka, Myanmar and helped India win each time.

As coach Sattar had his great success with Mohammedan SC in 1981, helping them win their last Calcutta League title.

Abdus Sattar died from pneumonia in Kolkata on 23 April 2011, at the age of 85. He was the recipient of “Mohun Bagan Ratna” award in the year 2008.
