Gostho Behari Pal (20 August 1896 – 8 April 1976) was born in Bhojeswar, Faridpore, Bengal Presidency (currently located in Bangladesh). He moved to Kolkata when he was an infant and lived there till his very last days.

Nicknamed as the “Chinese Wall” he was one of the best defenders of contemporary Indian football. He started playing for Kumartuli A.C. at the age of 11 and joined Mohun Bagan at the age of 16. He played in Mohun Bagan from 1913 to 1936. In 1921, Gostho Pal was honored with the captaincy of the Mohun Bagan football team, and he remained as the club captain for next five years. He was selected as captain of the team that IFA sent to Sri Lanka in 1933.

He retired from football in 1936. He was the first Indian footballer to be honored with the Padma Shri, on April 28, 1962. He passed away at the age of 79 on April 8, 1976.

A statue was erected in his memory in 1983 on the Gostho Pal Sarani in Kolkata. Mohun Bagan awarded him the “Mohun Bagan Ratna” posthumously in 2004.
